9 killed in fire at Telangana hydroelectric plant

Nagarkurnool, Aug. 21 : Nine people died as fire broke out in the Srisailam hydroelectric plant on the Telangana-Andhra Pradesh border on Friday, a senior government official said. Of nine bodies three were identified as assistant engineers Sundar Naik, Mohan Kumar and Fathima. Telengana CM K. Chandrasekhar Rao ordered a comprehensive inquiry by CID into the cause of the accident. Govind Singh, CID’s additional Director of Police has been appointed as the inquiry officer.

The fire irrupted possibly due to short-circuit in the electric panels of the power house and spread to other parts of the other side.
The fire broke out late on Thursday night when at least 17 people were inside the plant and eight of them managed to come out. A police official said six persons have been admitted to local hospitals for treatment for suffocation.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao expressed shock over the accident. A press release from his office said- “The CM is eliciting information on the accident on a regular basis. The CM wants all those who are trapped in the plant to come out safely.”
